Prime Minister Narendra Modi has once again endorsed the need for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the country, stating that the Constitution guarantees equal rights to all people. Minister of State for External Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs V Muraleedharan backed the Prime Minister, stating that the Constitution stipulates the UCC, and the courts have requested its implementation. However, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal criticized PM Modi, stating that he should focus on poverty, inflation, and unemployment before addressing other matters, adding that he rarely addresses pressing issues in the country. PM Modi had made the comments during the flagging off of five Vande Bharat Express trains, stating that the country cannot run on two laws. The UCC has been mandated by Part 4, Article 44 of the Indian Constitution, corresponding with Directive Principles of State Policy, which makes it mandatory for the State to provide its citizens with a UCC throughout India.
