Nagaland is taking steps to ensure young leaders are trained in the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The program aims to encourage young leaders to generate quality ideas and take responsibility for the challenges of development and sustainability in the region.
The training program focuses on local issues and the creation of a sustainable future. It involves 95 young delegates from different regions in Nagaland. Advisor of School Education and SCERT, Dr Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, underlined the need for young people to join politics, not just by joining political parties or running for office, but through leadership.
Furthermore, Nayantara Sasikumar, the OSD (Planning) and state nodal officer of SDG Coordination Centre, emphasized developing a sustainable consciousness at all levels of society through fresh energy and thinking, which young leaders could contribute to the SDG agenda.
In his keynote speech, R Ramakrishnan, principal secretary of Planning, disclosed that Nagaland has consistently improved its ranking in the SDG India index, with a composite SDG score of 61 in 2020-21, up from 57 in 2019, and ranked 19th among 35 Indian states and union territories.
The state has also launched a strategic development roadmap called the ‘Nagaland SDG Vision 2030: Leaving no one behind’ to enable sustainable development and promote inclusive, peaceful, and sustainable development for all.
The two-day event features technical sessions with various professionals discussing sustainable development topics. The young leaders’ training program aims to equip them with the skills and knowledge to contribute to the state’s efforts in achieving the SDGs.
Overall, Nagaland’s focus on sustainable development and the training of young leaders in SDGs demonstrates its commitment to obtaining a better future, which is inclusive and sustainable for all.
