Prime Minister Narendra Modi has criticized opposition parties for engaging in vote bank politics and their policy of appeasement in relation to the Triple Talaq issue. Speaking in Madhya Pradesh, the Prime Minister accused those who support Triple Talaq of doing a grave injustice to Muslim women. He asked why countries such as Pakistan, Indonesia and Bangladesh do not have Triple Talaq as part of their legal systems if it is a tenet of Islam. Modi also called for a uniform law, arguing that the country cannot have two distinct legal systems in place. The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is part of the Indian Constitution and its implementation has been advocated by the Supreme Court. However, the issue has proved controversial, with some politicians using it as a means of inciting Muslims. Speaking on Tuesday, Modi urged Pasmanda Muslims to resist the politics of appeasement and focus on improving their socio-economic status.
