Kurnool: Students pledge to stay away from drugs

An awareness programme was held at KV Subba Reddy Engineering College on Monday to mark the International Day Against Drugs Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Krishnakanth Patel called upon all sections of the society, particularly the students, to stay away from consuming drugs as it not only spoils their bright career but also ruins their families.

Patel urged students to abstain from drugs such as ganja, khaini, brown sugar, heroin, and others. He also informed them about the various disadvantages of consuming spurious products. He highlighted the police department’s efforts to restrict the sale of drugs and spurious products, including conducting raids and keeping an eye on people involved in selling them.

The ASP stated that several students and people who are addicted to drugs are ruining their future and creating law and order problems in the society. To spread awareness, hoardings and posters have been arranged in 74 colleges across the district with programmes conducted in 20 colleges. Awareness rallies were also taken out in Adoni, Yemmiganur, Kurnool, Kodumur, Pathikonda, Alur, and Kosigi mandals.

Anti-drug committees have been formed in the district, and 20 coordination committees have been formed involving other department officials. Krishnakanth Patel added that stringent action would be taken against people who try to play with the lives of innocent people.

The ASP appealed to people to keep the police informed about the sellers or inform the toll-free number 14500. The information given to the police would be kept confidential. The police are continuously conducting checks at check posts, bus stations, and at all important places.

The department is invoking the Preventive Detention (PD) Act on persons found to be procuring, transporting, and selling spurious products. Several de-addiction and rehabilitation centres are being operated in the district, and Krishnakanth Patel suggested that people consult the doctors at these centres and take advice to overcome the problems.

The ASP and the college management, along with the students, took a pledge not to consume drugs during the awareness programme. Krishnakanth Patel concluded by reiterating his call to all sections of society, particularly the youth, to stay away from drugs. It would not only ruin their future but have a detrimental effect on society as well.
