Saracens’ Australian rugby player, Will Skelton, has revealed the vital ingredient needed to win tournaments: edge. Skelton believes that Eddie Jones’ Wallabies squad has this edge, along with the necessary youth and experience to succeed. While the announcement of Michael Hooper and James Slipper as the Wallabies’ co-captains for The Rugby Championship was widely reported, Skelton’s inclusion reportedly went somewhat under the radar.
Since Skelton left the Australian team in 2016, rugby fans in Australia have been reminded of one of rugby’s great sporting losses. However, the French-based lock has become one of Europe’s best, winning three European Championship Cups before moving to La Rochelle earlier this year. He was even included as part of Stephen Jones’ greatest rugby team in the last 40 years.
Back in Australia for the first time since 2016, Skelton is hoping to inject some experience and wisdom into the Wallabies squad as they prepare for The Rugby Championship. Skelton also knows what it takes to go deep in a World Cup campaign, having slogged it out at Cheika’s pre-World Cup Fat Camp at Notre Dame in Chicago in 2015. Skelton’s inclusion in Eddie Jones’ Wallabies squad has reportedly injected a sense of excitement into the national team ahead of the upcoming games.
Skelton believes that edge is the key to winning. It means being tough on the training field and competing in every set, maul, and scrum. He is not the only player in the Wallabies squad with these characteristics, though, as Richie Arnold has also impressed in leading Toulouse’s lineout during their triumph in Paris earlier this month. Skelton has played against Arnold many times, telling reporters that Arnold is a nuisance on the rugby field but a great guy.
Rugby fans eagerly await the upcoming Wallabies games to see if this new-look squad with edge can get their World Cup campaign back on track.
