Parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) woke up to light rains on Tuesday, bringing much-needed respite from the scorching heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the region on Tuesday. Heavy rains were witnessed in New Delhi’s ITO and other areas in the early hours of the day.
The IMD had declared the onset of southwest monsoon over Mumbai and Delhi for the first time in decades, as heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning and thunderstorm lashed the two cities on Sunday. In Delhi, Safdarjung recorded 48.3mm of rainfall in a 24-hour period till 8:30 am on Sunday.
Rains have been lashing several parts of the country, injuring many people and damaging infrastructure. In Himachal Pradesh, heavy rains triggered landslides and flash floods, killing six people and injuring around 10 more. According to Onkar Chand Sharma, principal secretary, disaster management, Himachal Pradesh, The loss due to rain is expected to be Rs 3 crore. Meanwhile, 124 roads have been damaged, which includes two national highways.
As per the latest IMD alert, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur in some places over East Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, East Madhya Pradesh, and West Madhya Pradesh. The rains may cause further damage to the infrastructure and cause the blockage of several roads and highways.
