Google has a surprise for you all. It’s not the new Pixel phones. Yes, it’s too early for them right now. But, the yearly hardware reveal is happening much earlier than usual, breaking away from the company’s traditional October timeline. The Made by Google showcase will take place on August 13, 2024, at 10:00 AM PT, and this is exactly when Google will unveil the latest of its Pixel hardware.
The event, set to happen at Google’s Mountain View headquarters in California, promises to show the best of Google AI, Android software and the Pixel portfolio of devices, according to the official invitation.
While the invitation doesn’t give away what really to expect from the Pixel portfolio of devices, Google’s Polish unit (and other regions) was kind enough to post a teaser on X (formerly known as Twitter) a glimpse at what’s about to be unveiled. And drum rolls, it’s the Pixel 9.
Some might guess it’d be a new Pixel Fold, but the teaser gives away with the Roman numeral ‘IX,’ which means 9, thus the Pixel 9. So, we could expect one, not two, but three phones in the Pixel 9 series – including a vanilla Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and allegedly the newest and biggest member of the family – the Pixel 9 XL.
Alongside the Pixel 9 phones, Google could also unveil the Pixel Watch 3, since it’s showing off the Pixel portfolio. There are rumours of a bigger option coming this year, namely the Pixel Watch 3 XL.
What more to expect? Maybe a next-gen Pixel Fold or a Pixel Tablet. But these two might not make the cut at this event, since it seems to focus entirely on the Pixel 9 series. And what, there is obviously going to be a whole lot of AI, it’s Google, so obviously. The company says it’ll be the best of [its] AI. So, new Pixel-only AI features. We can also expect the Android 15 to release at the same time.
The earlier timing of the event is unusual and has led to various theories. Some suggest it might be a strategy to avoid leaks that have plagued Google’s hardware unveil for years now. Or it possibly needs a headstart against Apple, which usually launches their new iPhones in September.
