The World Health Organization (WHO) has urged countries to enforce a 100% ban on public smoking and the use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) to combat the detrimental effects of tobacco on health. WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, emphasized the importance of implementing strict measures, including excise taxes and graphic health warnings, to reduce tobacco consumption and protect young people from tobacco industry interference. Dr. Moeti also highlighted the need for governments to adhere to their obligations under the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) to safeguard tobacco-control policies from industry influence. The WHO’s call to action aims to raise awareness about the risks associated with tobacco and nicotine products, particularly those targeting youth, encouraging countries to prioritize public health by curbing smoking and vaping in public spaces.
