At least five people, including two Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, were injured in an attack on a border outpost in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district on Sunday night. A mob attacked the outpost in Umsyiem village near Dawki town, about 100 km south of the state capital, prompting the BSF to retaliate with fired shots in the air. BSF Meghalaya Frontier inspector general Pradip Kumar told PTI that the attack was triggered by the recent seizure of a huge number of items meant for smuggling to Bangladesh and the subsequent identification of smuggling cartels. According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred when a vehicle with three occupants allegedly broke down near the outpost and the BSF accused the trio of being smugglers, which enraged the villagers. An inquiry has been instituted, Kumar confirmed.
