Former Chief Minister of Karnataka, BS Yediyurappa, is expected to lead the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) protest against the Congress party from July 4th. In an address to the party, Yediyurappa called for protests both inside and outside the legislative assembly, in opposition to the policies of the Congress government. The BJP is particularly unhappy with the fact that not all five of the Congress’ pre-election guarantees have been implemented, despite being in power for over a month, and has asked its party workers to take to the streets to demand change.

Yediyurappa also urged all party leaders to prepare for the upcoming Lok Sabha and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) elections and ensure that the BJP emerges victorious. We have the responsibility to make Narendra Modi, who is loved globally, the Prime Minister once again, and I have the confidence that we will make honest efforts to win all the Lok Sabha seats and will be successful in that, said Yediyurappa.

The BJP currently holds 66 out of 224 seats in the legislative assembly and is keen to overturn the Congress’ narrow win in the recent Karnataka elections. The party is expected to launch a series of protests and agitations against the government, beginning with a demonstration in front of the Gandhi statue at Vidhana Soudha on July 4th.

Yediyurappa also called on the Congress to deliver on their election promises, saying, intoxicated by power those in government are speaking whatever they want, this won’t be allowed to continue. He also demanded that the Congress fulfil their promise of providing 10 kg of rice to the poor through their ‘Anna Bhagya’ scheme, rather than the current 5 kg being provided by the Modi government.

The BJP is hoping to win the upcoming Lok Sabha and BBMP elections and emerge as the dominant political force in Karnataka. With BJP in power in 14 states and Congress in only five, Yediyurappa believes that the party should not suffer a setback and that they can build on their success in other parts of the country.
