Plans for a new sports facility on the rooftop of Southside Shopping Centre’s car park have been approved. Wandsworth Council has granted planning permission for London-based Padel Social Club to create a new sporting venue at the shopping centre. Padel Social Club in collaboration with Southside Shopping Centre will transform the rooftop of the centre’s multi-storey car park into a unique sports and recreational space.
The 30,000 sq ft venue will be spread across two levels and feature six covered padel courts, including an exhibition court. Additionally, changing rooms, a wellness area, and various food and drink kiosks will be included. Padel, a fast-paced sport often described as a mix between tennis and squash, is gaining popularity globally.
The new Padel Social Club at Southside aims to open its doors by the end of 2024, offering an inclusive space for all to play, learn, and socialize. The facility will also include a co-working space overlooking the courts, providing a vibrant community space for residents. Southside Shopping Centre’s Director, Rebecca Ruddle, expressed excitement about the partnership, highlighting the opportunity to enhance the leisure offering at the center.
Councillor Tony Belton praised the project for utilizing an underutilized space to create a sports and leisure facility. The initiative aligns with the council’s goal of promoting health and well-being opportunities for residents. CEO Kristian Hunter emphasized the club’s commitment to introducing more people to the social sport of Padel, partnering with Southside to bring this dynamic experience to Wandsworth.
