Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Sougata Roy has criticized Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his alleged inability to restore peace in Manipur amid ongoing violence. Roy claimed that Shah’s three-day visit to the state was unproductive and that the Central government should consider removing the Chief Minister. Roy also took issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent foreign visit, arguing that Modi should not have gone abroad while Manipur was in crisis.
The comments came after an all-party meeting convened by Shah to discuss the situation in Manipur. The meeting was attended by senior politicians from various parties, including BJP National President JP Nadda, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, and CPI(M) MP John Brittas. The violence in the state began on 3 May following clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities during a rally organized by the All Tribals Students Union (ATSU) to protest the inclusion of Meiteis in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list.
In response to the criticism, Shah released a statement condemning the violence and reiterating the government’s commitment to promoting peace in the region. He also assured the public that the government is working with local authorities to restore order and provide assistance to affected communities.
The situation in Manipur remains tense, with more than 100 deaths reported over the past few weeks. Many have called for urgent action to prevent further violence, with some advocating for greater government intervention and others calling for reconciliation between the different communities.
The ongoing violence in Manipur underscores the complex social and political dynamics at play in the region. It also highlights the challenges faced by the government in addressing these issues and promoting lasting peace. As the situation continues to evolve, it is important that all stakeholders work together to find a mutually acceptable solution that meets the needs and aspirations of all communities in the state.
