A prominent BBC News presenter, Karin Giannone, has announced she will be off the airwaves for an extended period due to major surgery.

Karin Giannone, a familiar face on BBC News, has shared with her audience that she will be taking a hiatus from broadcasting as she recovers from a significant knee osteotomy operation. The 50-year-old journalist informed her followers about her health situation via social media, posting a hospital bed photo of herself surrounded by monitoring wires as she recuperates from the surgery.

Alongside the image, Karin wrote: I’m out of action for a couple of months after a knee osteotomy surgery, but very much looking forward to being back on air on @BBCNews when I am up and running again! In a light-hearted note despite her circumstances, she added: (*not actually running – that won’t happen for a while).

The news of her surgery prompted a wave of support from fans and colleagues. Martine Croxall, another BBC News presenter, responded with: Woozy and wonderful x.

Yasmin Khatun Dewan, who presents on BBC World News, expressed: Wishing you a speedy recovery Karin xx., reports the Mirror.

Supportive messages from viewers also poured in. One fan wrote: Best wishes to you, Karin. Get well soon.

Another echoed the sentiment: Wishing you a speedy recovery Karin xx.

And a third supporter commented: Karin hope your recovery goes well – and see you soon! .

Get well soon my dear friend, wrote another. Karin later took to her Instagram Stories to share her announcement, sharing a snap of her leg in a leg brace as she recuperated in a hospital bed.

The broadcaster previously explained that she required the surgery for a long time, joking about 30 years.

Taking to Instagram on Thursday, she shared a series of snaps taken over recent weeks after completing a string of half marathons. Writing alongside her images, Karin penned: 3rd #halfmarathon in a fortnight to really overdo it before I succumb this week to a knee surgery I’ve needed for a long time (about 30 years! ).

Lovely surprise section through #southamptonfc stadium as well as passing the #unioncastleline building at the docks where at the age of two I arrived with my family on a ship for a new life in the UK.

Well done Karin and hope the op goes well. As you know, you have my full sympathies concerning teenage knee injuries, said one fan.

Another responded: Very well done! I always wonder how you manage to look so remarkably well after a long distance run! Very best wishes for the operation. I do hope it goes well.

Meanwhile, BBC’s Olga Malchevska commented: This is such an incredible achievement! Congratulations! And may your knee recover quickly.
