The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the southwest monsoon season has finally covered the cities of Delhi and Mumbai. The weather forecasting department also confirmed that the Southwest Monsoon has advanced further into some more parts of the Central Arabian Sea, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, East Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh.

The national capital and the surrounding region, NCR (National Capital Region) such as Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad, experienced heavy rainfall, lightning, and thunderstorms on Sunday, bringing much-needed relief from the scorching heat. The Regional Weather Forecasting Centre (RWFC) predicted light to moderate rainfall in and around Delhi and the NCR.

While IMD issued an Orange alert for Raigad and Ratnagiri, heavy rainfall lashed parts of Maharashtra, leading to the weather department issuing a yellow alert for Palghar, Mumbai, Thane, and Sindhudurg. Moderate to heavy rain in the city and suburbs, possibility of very heavy rainfall at isolated places today, said IMD. The Regional Meteorological Centre recorded Mumbai city receiving 104mm of rain, with 123mm and 139mm recorded in the eastern suburbs and western suburbs, respectively, over the past 24 hours.

The Indian Meteorological Department issued another yellow alert for Mumbai on Saturday and predicted heavier rainfall in the next 4-5 days. The southwest monsoon is expected to arrive today, as per the weather department. Rainfall intensity to gradually increase over parts of Maharashtra during next 4-5 days. Indication of expected severe weather in the next 5 days, said Regional Meteorological Centre.

While the monsoon season arrived a few days back in other parts of the country, Mumbai and Delhi have now been included. This monsoon season is critical for agriculture and offers respite from the blistering heat of summer.
