The Leeds man charged with the murder of a Windham man, who has been missing since May 12, 2023, appeared in court for the first time Monday. Joseph Chute, 30, is being held without bail in connection with the death of Alex Jackson. Chute appeared in 8th District Court via videoconference from Androscoggin County Jail, where he is currently detained. The court appointed attorney Verne Paradie to represent Chute, who is facing a charge of intentional or knowing murder. Jackson’s family reported him missing in May last year, sparking an investigation by authorities from multiple agencies. Despite ongoing efforts, Jackson’s body has not been found. Additionally, Chute pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor charges of domestic violence stalking and terrorizing. The court set bail at $5,000 cash in that case, with strict conditions. Investigations are ongoing as details surrounding Jackson’s disappearance and Chute’s possible involvement continue to emerge.
