The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that the southwest monsoon has further advanced into most parts of peninsular and east India as well as some parts of central and northwest India. The IMD added that the monsoon has advanced into some more parts of the central Arabian Sea, Maharashtra, remaining parts of Karnataka, Telangana, and Chhattisgarh, some parts of east Madhya Pradesh, remaining parts of Uttar Pradesh, most parts of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, some parts of Haryana, Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh, making way for heavy rainfall across the country.
According to the IMD’s weather forecast for the next five days, widespread light to moderate rainfall with isolated thunderstorm and lightning is expected across Northeast and adjoining east India, while high probability of isolated heavy rains to very heavy rainfall can be expected over Odisha from June 25 to 26. Furthermore, isolated heavy to heavy rainfall is expected over Jharkhand while Gangetic West Bengal can expect isolated heavy rainfall on June 24 and 25, with Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura experiencing heavy rainfall from June 25 to 28.
In the northwest region, the IMD has predicted fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall with isolated thunderstorm and lightning, while the western Himalayan region can expect similar weather patterns from June 24 to 28. Similarly, the plains of northwest India, excluding west Rajasthan, may witness these weather conditions from June 25 to 28.
Furthermore, on June 25 and 26, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi are likely to witness isolated heavy rainfall, along with east Rajasthan from June 25 to 28. The IMD also predicts that light to moderate widespread rainfall with isolated heavy falls, thunderstorm, and lightning over the region including Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha is expected during the next five days, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall anticipated over east Madhya Pradesh on June 26 and 27.
South India is expected to experience light to moderate scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with isolated thunderstorm and lightning over the region, excluding Tamil Nadu, for the next five days. There is a likelihood of isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over coastal Karnataka on June 24, while Kerala and Mahe can expect such rainfall on June 27. Coastal Andhra Pradesh, along with Yanam, and Telangana may experience isolated heavy rainfall on June 24, while Odisha can expect it from June 25 to 28.
The IMD’s predictions of heavy rains recently became a reality in Mumbai, with a significant rise in water levels reported in the city. The city witnessed heavy rains for a second consecutive day on Thursday, with several roads and low-lying areas getting waterlogged. The IMD has already issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the city and surrounding areas over the weekend.
The forecast of heavy rain will continue to impact travel, transport, and everyday life in India, leading local governments to issue warnings to their residents. Relief efforts are likely to be underway in some of the most affected areas. Citizens are also advised to keep track of weather updates and take necessary precautions to stay safe during this monsoon season.
