Bengal Violence: Panchayat Polls Preview of Next Year’s Elections

The West Bengal panchayat (rural bodies) elections, scheduled for July 8, have already turned violent, with nine deaths, gun battles, and bombings reported in inter-party clashes. In response to allegations by the BJP, CPI(M), and Congress Party that the ruling TMC is trying to rig the election, the Calcutta High Court and Supreme Court have ordered that central forces be deployed for fair policing. The CBI has also been called in to investigate allegations of collusion between state government officials and the TMC.

The TMC has denied any wrongdoing, while activists from opposition parties continue to voice their concerns. Governor C V Bose has even set up a control room in the Raj Bhavan to monitor the situation, which is highly unusual.

The situation is pointing to a precursory election in 2022, as the violence continues to escalate. With bloodshed already spreading fast and the smell of gunpowder filling the air, the upcoming polls could be a potential disruption to the state’s political landscape.

The Bengal panchayat polls have been the focus of controversy, especially regarding the TMC’s alleged attempts to influence them and the opposition’s claims of rigging. These issues have highlighted the need for impartial policing in the region.

This year’s elections are likely to be a precursor to the assembly polls in 2022. The elections, which are still several months away, have already sparked hostility and violence. Unless the authorities take swift action to address the situation, it could escalate further, leading to further loss of life and property damage.

In conclusion, Bengal’s panchayat polls have become a battleground for political parties. The escalating violence signals that the assembly polls next year could be just as volatile. The involvement of central forces may provide a temporary solution, but a long-term plan is required to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
