SACRAMENTO, CA (February 13, 2024) – The Contractors State License Board (CSLB) and the Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office collaborated on an undercover operation that targeted unlicensed contractors in Humboldt County. The sting operation took place in the Eureka area during severe storms in early February resulting in the issuance of a Notice to Appear in criminal court for four individuals who allegedly conducted contracting activities without the required license. These individuals face fines and potential jail time.
The CSLB and law enforcement officials cited the suspects for submitting bids that exceeded the legal limit of $500, with bid amounts ranging from $1,400 for an interior paint project to $12,000 for deck work. According to California law, unlicensed individuals must clearly state their status if advertising for construction contracting services and are prohibited from bidding on projects exceeding $500, including labor and materials.
David Fogt, CSLB Registrar, emphasized the importance of hiring licensed contractors, especially post-storm periods when unlicensed individuals may attempt to take advantage of vulnerable consumers seeking home repairs. He highlighted CSLB’s efforts to educate consumers on hiring licensed contractors as a crucial safeguard.
In a twist to the operation, one individual may face an additional obstruction of justice charge for allegedly posting information about the sting operation on social media immediately after leaving the sting site, despite being advised against doing so. The involvement of social media raises new challenges for law enforcement in maintaining the integrity and confidentiality of their operations.
The sting operation serves as a reminder to consumers to be vigilant and conduct due diligence when engaging in home improvement projects. By hiring licensed contractors, individuals can protect themselves from potential scams and subpar work, ensuring quality and legal compliance in their projects.
