February 17 – The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has officially reopened the 18R/36L Runway at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos after an extensive maintenance period. The runway, which was initially closed for repairs in April 2023, experienced unexpected delays, extending the closure to nearly a year. The reopening of Runway 18R now allows for international traffic to utilize links 2 and 3, alleviating the strain on the domestic 18L/36R runway. FAAN Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, expressed confidence in the reopening process and emphasized ongoing efforts to accelerate the timeline with the support of key stakeholders. Kenya Airways made a successful landing on the newly reopened runway and received a warm water cannon salute, marking a significant milestone in the airport’s operations. The 3,900-meter long Runway 18R/36L with a width of 60 meters is now fully operational, signaling a positive step forward for air travel at MMIA.
