CALLAWAY, Md. – Half a century of impact, innovation, and community engagement culminates in an evening of reflection and celebration. The St. Mary’s County Chamber of Commerce, an organization that has stood at the forefront of business and community advancement, is poised to commemorate its 50th Anniversary on Friday, March 8th.

The stage is set at the White Rose venue in Callaway for an event that promises to honor the past while forging a path for future success. While promising to be a night to remember, it’s important to look back on the origins of its establishment and the crucial role it has played in the county’s growth.

The Chamber was established shortly following World War II during a period of urban expansion within the County when forward-thinking business leaders from Leonardtown and Lexington Park saw the necessity for a local organization dedicated to nurturing economic development and business prosperity. The Chamber was formed to maintain a favorable business climate in St. Mary’s County by assisting in the development, growth, and promotion of business. Over the years it has consistently supported the progress of established businesses and organizations, while also helping new enterprises and entrepreneurs looking to make their mark.

At its inception, the Chamber was comprised of twenty-one members. Twenty of these founding members remain active, showcasing the organization’s lasting connection to its beginnings. The continued involvement of these founding business members highlights a culture of commitment and community within the Chamber. Ann Lewis, who has served in the roles of both Ambassador and Ambassador Chair, is continuing the legacy of her father, Nick Smith. Smith, a founder of the Chamber and a retired Navy Captain, instilled the values of mutual support and collaboration among businesses. Ann’s work reflects her father’s belief in these principles, emphasizing the importance of preserving the Chamber’s founding spirit to ensure the prosperity of the community.

Now with over 450+ members representing more than 15,500 employees, the Chamber serves as a pivotal link among various community sectors — government, healthcare, education, law enforcement, the arts, businesses, farmers, and nonprofits. The Chamber has significantly influenced policy-making and business advocacy by actively engaging in the research and development of policies on critical issues through its memberships in key regional organizations such as the Southern Maryland Naval Alliance, the Patuxent Partnership, and the County’s Economic Development Commission. The Chamber also remains committed to its mission by organizing seminars for start-up businesses at local trade fairs and offering information on human resources (HR) practices and methods to obtain grant funding.

The Chamber supports local business owners as they navigate the growth or shift in focus of their enterprises. Jimmy Hayden, a local realtor and 1st Vice Chair of the Chamber’s board, credits the organization with providing vital support and connections across his various business ventures, from a restaurant/carry-out service to real estate. He highlights the benefits of active participation, including networking opportunities, increased recognition, and valuable advice from fellow members. Hayden emphasizes the importance of engaging actively with the Chamber. He explains, Being a member of the Chamber is beneficial, but the true value comes from what you invest into it. Serving on the board and various committees connects you with numerous other business owners, some of whom may be encountering the same challenges as you or have already navigated through them. The support from these fellow members is incredibly valuable.

The Chamber supports local businesses of all sizes, especially small businesses, with over half of its members (55%) having fewer than 15 employees. It has also launched numerous initiatives aimed at empowering minority and women-owned businesses. These initiatives include organizing seminars and training sessions for start-ups in these categories, hosting monthly luncheons specifically for women, and celebrating a Women in Business Appreciation Day.

The Chamber plans to expand on its success by further supporting local businesses, naval facilities, the nonprofit sector, and future business leaders in the community. Among its innovative efforts are initiatives aimed at engaging students from the surrounding area. One standout program is the National Civics Bee, which challenges participants to identify a local community issue, consider diverse perspectives on it, examine existing civic programs addressing the issue, and propose their own solutions. Christine Bermark, Executive Director of the St. Mary’s Chamber of Commerce, points out that this program offers a significant benefit to area students, This initiative seeks to empower students to voice their ideas, enhance their understanding of civics, foster trust in others and institutions, and inspire them with the realization that they can make a difference.

As the Chamber continues to champion local development, it warmly invites the community to join in commemorating its vital role in enhancing the prosperity and progress of St. Mary’s County. This significant event not only celebrates a milestone in the Chamber’s history but also anticipates the continued growth and prosperity of the region. In this spirit, the Chamber welcomes partnerships with businesses and community leaders who share its vision for economic development. Participating as a sponsor offers a chance to showcase your commitment to the community, ensuring visibility among leading business professionals and leaders.

Tickets are available for those wishing to be part of this momentous occasion, offering a unique way to engage with and support the local community’s future. For those interested in sponsorship opportunities or seeking ticket information, the Chamber encourages visits to their website at the links provided below. This is an open invitation to the community to unite and make the 50th Anniversary Gala a memorable celebration that honors the rich history, vibrant present, and promising future of the area.
