Space-Based Power Could Become a Reality After 2050, According to New NASA Report

Space-based solar power (SBSP) is a concept that has been gaining attention in recent months. Last summer, a successful test of a solar power demonstrator in space took place, showcasing the potential of this technology. However, while the idea is promising, there are significant obstacles to overcome before it can be widely adopted, including cost.

In an effort to support the development of SBSP, NASA commissioned a study from their internal Office of Technology, Policy, and Strategy. The study explores the feasibility and potential benefits of space-based power generation. It suggests that if the necessary technological advancements are made, SBSP could become the most carbon-efficient and lowest-cost power source for humanity by 2050.

The report analyzes the cost and lifecycle carbon emissions of two different SBSP systems proposed by prominent inventors. The calculations show that both systems currently produce electricity that is more expensive than existing technologies. Additionally, even the more climate-friendly system still lags behind alternatives such as hydropower and nuclear fission in terms of climate impact.

One of the major obstacles to overcome is the cost associated with launching and maintaining a satellite in orbit. The study takes into account potential reductions in launch costs, but even with these adjustments, the number of launches required for SBSP to be cost-competitive remains prohibitive. Furthermore, the infrastructure required to support such a massive satellite does not currently exist, making it challenging to address any failures that may occur in space.

Another significant concern is the greenhouse gas emissions associated with launching the necessary equipment into space. The report highlights the lack of studies regarding the long-term impact of emitting combustion products into the high atmosphere. However, even without considering these emissions, the sheer amount of greenhouse gases emitted to transport the system’s components to space poses a challenge in terms of competing with low-carbon alternatives.

Despite these obstacles, the report also suggests a scenario in which SBSP becomes the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly energy source available by 2050. This scenario relies on technological advancements and improvements, such as increased in-space assembly and maintenance, the use of ion drives for transportation, and longer equipment lifespans.

While the report acknowledges the potential of SBSP, its outcome suggests that further monitoring and development are necessary. NASA’s ongoing efforts in areas such as reducing launch costs and improving in-space infrastructure may play a crucial role in overcoming the current challenges. Moreover, other technologies like asteroid mining or deployable lightweight structures could bring about groundbreaking changes that influence the economic viability of SBSP.

In conclusion, the report highlights that although significant advancements are required, the possibility of space-based power generation after 2050 remains a promising prospect. While there are still significant hurdles to overcome, NASA recognizes the potential benefits of SBSP and will continue to monitor the developments in this field. As advancements in technology occur and additional research is conducted, the future reports on the viability of SBSP are expected to consider new and exciting opportunities for this innovative energy source.
