Detroit police ‘very confident’ in security plan for 2024 NFL draft

Detroit officials are assuring the public that they have a robust security plan in place as they prepare to host the NFL draft in April. The event is expected to draw upwards of 300,000 people to the city, prompting concerns about safety in light of recent incidents, such as a shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs’ victory parade. However, Detroit Police Chief James White has expressed his confidence in the security measures being implemented.

In an interview with WILX-TV, Chief White highlighted the department’s partnerships, community support, and comprehensive security plan as the reasons for his confidence. He emphasized that managing security in a draft setting is easier compared to a sprawling parade. The department’s plan, which has been in development for over two years, includes gun-free zones, the use of helicopters, undercover officers, and the utilization of their real-time crime center.

Chief White also acknowledged the importance of learning from past events and implementing best practices based on those lessons. He explained that incidents like the shooting at the Kansas City victory parade are carefully studied to ensure enhanced safety measures are put in place.

Detroit’s bid to host the NFL draft began in 2017 and was officially approved by the NFL in March 2022. The team president, Rod Wood, expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to showcase the vibrant downtown and the city’s culture, energy, and passion.

Scheduled to take place from April 25 to 27 in an area around Campus Martius and Hart Plaza, the draft will not only feature the selection of promising football professionals but also include musical performances, interactive exhibits, autograph sessions, and more. The event will be free for all attendees.

The NFL draft has moved around various cities in recent years, held previously in New York City before shifting to other locations such as Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, Nashville, Cleveland, Las Vegas, and most recently, Kansas City.

With Detroit’s careful planning, strong partnerships, and community support, city officials aim to ensure that the 2024 NFL draft becomes a safe and memorable event for all participants and attendees. The security measures implemented, alongside the lively atmosphere of downtown Detroit, promise an exciting experience for football fans and visitors alike.

In conclusion, Detroit is poised to deliver a successful and secure NFL draft, leveraging its carefully crafted security plan that has been years in the making. The city’s officials, police force, and community are determined to host an unforgettable event while prioritizing the safety of everyone involved.
