The University of Regina (U of R) is reviving its journalism program and expanding its scope to include communications. After being put on hold in December 2022, the program is set to re-launch, now offering a bachelor of arts in journalism, news media, and communication. Shannon Dea, the dean of the U of R faculty of arts, stated that the addition of communication courses alongside journalism will better prepare students for the evolving working world. The revamped program also introduces changes to its mandatory paid internship program, allowing students the opportunity to intern in either communications or journalism.
Prior to the hiatus, the U of R had seen a decline in enrollment over the past decade, with some years having single-digit student numbers. Dean Shannon Dea believes that the program’s new trajectory will equip students with versatile skills, making them future-proof in a rapidly changing job market. The journalism industry has recently seen widespread cuts, including at major broadcasters and publishers like CBC and Bell Media. However, Joe Camplin, a fourth-year journalism student at the University of Regina, maintains an optimistic outlook, stating that he and his classmates are not deterred by the challenging job market.
The redesigned program aims to be more flexible and convenient for students with interdisciplinary interests, working professionals, and mature students. Previously, aspiring journalists at U of R had to complete two years of pre-journalism or possess a previous degree before applying for the program. Under the new structure, students will enroll in the faculty of arts for a four-year program and select the journalism, news media, and communication program as one of their majors.
Gennadiy Chernov, the program’s director, reassured that journalism will remain at the core of the program despite the addition of communication courses. He emphasized the importance of upholding journalistic values and ethical responsibilities while equipping graduates with enhanced communication skills. Chernov acknowledges the significant changes the field of journalism has undergone, noting the need for flexibility and proficiency in working across various media platforms.
