The Karnataka government has announced its plans to introduce new legislation aimed at curbing cricket betting and online gaming. Concerns raised by members across party affiliations in the Assembly regarding the adverse impact of these activities on youth prompted the decision. Home Minister G. Parameshwara stated, Soon we will bring out a new legislation to prevent this, while also highlighting the responsibility of the Central government to amend relevant legislation to combat the issue.

Pointing out that the Central government receives 28% GST on proceeds from online gaming, Parameshwara urged them not to allow its continuation simply because of the revenue generated. IT&BT Minister Priyank Kharge emphasized the need for a clear definition of Game of Chance and Game of Skill by both the state and central authorities to establish a legal framework for banning online betting and gaming.

Kharge also noted that gaming transactions account for around ₹1.6 lakh crore, with the Centre receiving approximately ₹74,000 crore in GST from these transactions. Some online gamers even engage in playing on foreign servers to evade GST.

The Home Minister also highlighted the government’s efforts in combating drug-related issues. He revealed that the government had filed 6,764 cases related to drug peddling, resulting in the seizure of 9,645 kg of ganja and 233 kg of synthetic drugs, amounting to roughly ₹142 crore. Additionally, 245 foreigners, primarily African nationals, have been deported for their involvement in drug dealings, with 102 foreigners facing legal actions.

Congress MLA Ravi Ganiga alleged that cricket betting has become rampant in various districts, including Mandya, with bookies operating in every prominent village. Ganiga claimed that after each IPL cricket match, bookies confiscate two-wheelers from the youth who fail to provide the betting amount. He further asserted that the bookies enjoy connections with all three major political parties and exploit their influence when faced with trouble.

The Karnataka government’s new legislation aims to address the rising concerns surrounding cricket betting and online gaming, particularly their impact on the youth. With the support of the Central government, they hope to implement necessary amendments to the existing legislation. In addition, efforts to combat drug-related issues are underway, with substantial cases filed and significant quantities of drugs seized. The government’s actions seek to protect the welfare of the state’s residents while cracking down on illegal activities and their associated networks.
