University of Dallas President: Mission of Higher Ed is Open Debate in Pursuit of Truth
Sanford, a professor of philosophy, has served as president of the University of Dallas, a private Catholic university located in Irving, Texas, since 2022.
In a speech delivered at the Heritage Foundation, widely considered the most influential conservative think tank in the United States, University of Dallas President Jonathan J. Sanford expressed concerns about the level of politicization that reigns in American universities and emphasized that the pursuit of truth requires open debate.
Sanford titled his speech Universities, Patriotism, and Citizenship: A Catholic Liberal Arts Approach to the Election Year, and stressed that instead of taking political stances, universities should foster open debate to allow the pursuit of truth to proceed unhindered.
He criticized university presidents who made statements implying that holding the pro-life position on abortion is wicked, stating that such statements silence those who like to argue about that position, which can lead to the alienation of Christians on campus.
Politicization, Sanford warned, also threatens the public’s trust in the objectivity of academic research and institutions in general.
The perception is growing that universities aren’t worth it anymore, he said. There seems to be a whole lot of politics going on. Does that mean there’s not much learning going on?
Addressing concerns about cancel culture, Sanford noted that the university setting should be one where genuine debate can occur.
He highlighted the importance of free and open debate in fostering patriotism. Sanford referenced the Federalist Papers, which provided the foundation for the U.S. Constitution, as an example of how constructive debate can lead to positive outcomes. Sanford added that one must learn, test, and then come to embrace the founding principles, leading to admiration and love for them.
However, Sanford was quick to clarify that from a Catholic perspective, patriotism does not always mean supporting the actions of one’s country. He cited St. Thomas More, an adviser to King Henry VIII who was executed for refusing to support the king’s defiance of the Church, as the ideal example of a patriot. Sanford stated that genuine patriotism is grounded in love for God and his Church.
Sanford’s speech addressed important issues surrounding the role of universities in American society and the need for open debate to pursue truth. He emphasized the dangers of politicization and the importance of fostering an environment where genuine dialogue can take place.
