The man suspected of robbing a U.S. postal worker in rural Weslaco last week is now behind bars. 21-year-old Daniel Alvarado Ramirez was arrested Friday night, arraigned on a state charge of robbery, and booked into the Hidalgo County jail on a $500,000 bond.

Authorities believe Ramirez was the man who drove up behind a female mail deliverer last Wednesday afternoon and grabbed her wallet out of her back pocket. He then pushed her when she tried to stop him and fell and broke her wrist.

The incident happened on the 1300 block of Isabella Grace Street just north of Mile 10 north of Weslaco. It’s not clear if Ramirez will be charged separately on the federal level.

Upon his arrest, authorities commended the investigative efforts that led to Ramirez’s capture. Sheriff Hector Lopez stated, We take incidents like this very seriously, and I am pleased with the swift action taken by our officers to apprehend the suspect. Our priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of our community.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service, which is responsible for investigating crimes involving postal employees and the mail, is currently working with local law enforcement to determine if federal charges will be filed.

We are fully cooperating with the local authorities in this case, stated Julian Sanchez, a spokesperson for the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. The safety of our postal workers is of utmost importance, and we will pursue all necessary steps to hold the suspect accountable for his actions.

Meanwhile, the injured postal worker is expected to make a full recovery but will be unable to continue her duties for the time being due to her broken wrist. The incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers faced by postal workers while carrying out their essential services.

Local residents are grateful for the prompt arrest and hope that justice will be served. Mary Johnson, a resident in the area, expressed her relief, saying, It’s a tight-knit community, and we take care of our own. We’re glad the suspect is off the streets and that our postal worker is on the road to recovery.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the incident highlights the importance of ensuring the safety and security of postal workers who play a crucial role in delivering mail and keeping communities connected. Law enforcement agencies are committed to bringing offenders to justice and preventing future incidents that could jeopardize the well-being of those serving the public.

The arrest of Daniel Alvarado Ramirez serves as a testament to the dedication and vigilance of law enforcement in protecting the community and upholding the law. Postal workers can continue their vital work, knowing that steps are being taken to maintain their safety in the face of potential threats.

Authorities will now focus on gathering further evidence to determine the appropriate charges against Ramirez and ensure that justice is served. The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the risks faced by those who serve the public and the importance of community support in bringing offenders to justice.

As the case progresses, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service will remain closely involved, working in tandem with local authorities to provide necessary assistance and uphold the integrity of the postal system. The arrest of Daniel Alvarado Ramirez is a step towards restoring a sense of security for postal workers as they continue to serve the community.
