Nagpur: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)-Nagpur recently accomplished a groundbreaking feat by successfully performing a complex Bentall procedure on a critically ill 25-year-old patient. The surgery, which was performed free of cost under the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY) scheme, showcased the institution’s advanced capabilities and marked a significant milestone for AIIMS Nagpur.
The patient, who was suffering from heart failure, liver dysfunction, and a life-threatening aortic dissection, received the intricate surgery, which involved replacing the damaged aortic valve and ascending aorta while simultaneously implanting new coronary arteries. The procedure not only restored normal blood flow but also prevented further complications.
Dr Pravin Salunkhe and his team led the complex surgery, which required meticulous planning and expertise due to its inherent risks, including heavy blood loss. However, the AIIMS Nagpur team managed to minimize blood loss by collecting only two units from the patient himself.
