Today, an historic event is taking place in the progress of the commonwealth as the first Cabinet meeting is held in Canberra, the new Federal capital. Despite being referred to as a city of foundations by the Prince of Wales during his visit in 1920, Canberra has seen significant growth in the past year. With over 1,000 workers currently employed on various construction projects, the city’s foundations are expanding. The acquisition of the prestigious Yarralumla homestead, just a mile from Capitol Hill, has facilitated official visits, including the current Cabinet gathering. This demonstration of the Government’s commitment to the capital has fostered confidence that the next Parliament will convene in Canberra. Construction has already commenced on the Parliamentary buildings, hostels, and homes. However, it is regrettable that souvenir hunters have damaged some of the beautiful foundation stones laid by notable individuals. Even the stone laid by the Prince of Wales himself has suffered damage.
