Nearly two in five (33 per cent) web users in India faced Internet-born cyberattacks in 2023, according to a new report by global cybersecurity company Kaspersky. The report reveals that a total of 62,574,546 cyberthreats originating from the web were detected and blocked in India. Cyberattacks via browsers and social engineering were found to be the most prevalent methods of web infection. Cybercriminals take advantage of vulnerabilities in browsers and their plugins to infiltrate user systems, often without the user’s knowledge or action. This can result in the download of harmful file-less malware. Social engineering, where users are manipulated by cybercriminals into downloading malicious files, also poses a significant threat. In these instances, users are tricked into believing they are downloading legitimate applications or programs, allowing criminals to gain control of their devices. Kaspersky warns that as technologies like AI advance, fraud and scamming scenarios are expected to become more intricate and difficult to detect. The company advises Indian users to install security solutions on their devices to protect themselves from these web attacks.
