The federal government is set to establish six new cancer treatment centres in tertiary hospitals across the country, according to an announcement made by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Tunji Alausa. The move comes as part of the government’s efforts to enhance cancer care and treatment in Nigeria.

During a ministerial press briefing held in Abuja to mark the 2024 World Cancer Day, Dr Alausa revealed that the six new centres would be located in strategic locations across the country’s geopolitical zones. The hospitals slated to host the centres include the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital Ituku-Ozalla in Enugu State, Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital in Zaria, Federal Teaching Hospital in Katsina, University of Benin Teaching Hospital in Benin, Jos University Teaching Hospital in Jos, and Lagos University Teaching Hospital in Lagos. Additionally, the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital in Maiduguri is currently undergoing an upgrade.

The new treatment centres will be equipped with advanced medical technology, including brachytherapy machines and other equipment, to ensure effective and comprehensive cancer care. This development is expected to have a significant impact on the accessibility and quality of cancer treatment in Nigeria.

In his remarks, Dr Alausa emphasized the importance of sustainable funding for cancer care. He stated that the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) would play a crucial role in managing the funding for cancer care in the future. This would help prevent any duplication of roles and ensure that all patients, including vulnerable Nigerians, receive the necessary services. The launch of the operational guidelines for the NHIA Act further strengthens the commitment to providing adequate funding for cancer care.

The establishment of these new cancer treatment centres signifies a milestone in the government’s efforts to combat cancer and improve healthcare services in Nigeria. With improved access to advanced treatment facilities, patients can benefit from timely and effective interventions, ultimately improving their chances of recovery and survival.

The rising incidence of cancer in Nigeria has prompted urgent action to address the growing healthcare challenge. By prioritizing the establishment of these treatment centres, the government aims to alleviate the burden faced by cancer patients and their families. These initiatives are expected to make a substantial difference in the lives of those affected by cancer, offering hope and support when it is needed most.

It is hoped that these comprehensive efforts to enhance cancer care will contribute to reducing the prevalence and impact of cancer in Nigeria. The government’s commitment to providing accessible and high-quality treatment facilities demonstrates a dedication to improving the healthcare landscape and ensuring a healthier future for all citizens.

As developments progress, stakeholders and members of the public eagerly anticipate the operationalization of the new cancer treatment centres. The implementation of these initiatives is expected to positively transform the landscape of cancer care in Nigeria, offering renewed hope to patients and their loved ones.

With the establishment of the new cancer treatment centres, Nigeria takes a significant step forward in its battle against cancer. The impact of these efforts is poised to be far-reaching, creating more opportunities for early diagnosis, effective treatment, and improved outcomes in the fight against this devastating disease.
