China’s New Hyperloop Train Just Hit a Record 387 MPH During Testing

The China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC) has achieved a major milestone in the development of its hyperloop train. CASIC, a state-owned company known for its work in aerospace and defense, announced that its magnetically levitated (maglev) train reached a staggering speed of over 387 miles per hour (623 kilometers per hour) during testing. This sets a new record for the fastest speed ever attained by a superconducting maglev vehicle.

CASIC, which specializes in the design and manufacture of spacecraft and missiles, has been actively working on the development of a hyperloop. The company has constructed a section of low-vacuum tube spanning approximately 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) at a facility in China’s Shanxi province. According to reports from New Atlas, numerous tests have been conducted over the past several months. However, the recent achievement of the T-Flight train surpasses the highest-recorded maglev speed of 375 mph (603 km/h) set by Japan’s L0 Series train. Though CASIC has not disclosed the exact top speed, it has effectively broken the previous record.

The maglev train’s operation relies on a magnetic-levitation system. By utilizing magnets to lift the train off the track and propel it forward, the train essentially floats while comfortably riding on a cushion of air. This unique technology enables maglev trains to travel faster and more quietly than conventional trains. Moreover, their lack of direct emissions makes them much more environmentally friendly. While maglev trains are already in operation in countries like China, South Korea, and Japan, they currently operate at slower speeds than the T-Flight train.

CASIC expressed satisfaction with the recent test of the T-Flight, stating that it confirmed the effective interaction between the test tube, the train, and the track. The company plans to move into the second phase of testing which involves extending the track by an additional 37 miles (60 kilometers), ultimately allowing the T-Flight to reach even higher speeds. It is projected that the train will eventually achieve a speed of 621 mph (1,000 km/h), potentially reducing travel time between Shenzhen and Shanghai to just over an hour. For comparison, the fastest airliner in service, the Boeing 747, has a top speed of 652 mph.

Though the construction of maglev trains and their accompanying infrastructure can be costly, and progress can be impeded by bureaucratic processes, CASIC appears to have the necessary resources for its hyperloop project. According to Forbes, the company amassed a revenue of $37 billion in the previous year, indicating financial stability.

In conclusion, CASIC’s recent achievement in testing its hyperloop train marks a significant milestone in the development of high-speed transportation systems. With aspirations of reaching speeds of over 600 mph, the T-Flight train has the potential to revolutionize travel between major cities in China. As further advancements and tests are conducted, it is anticipated that hyperloop technology will continue to redefine the future of transportation, offering faster, greener, and more efficient travel options worldwide.
