An inebriated private school owner driving a large SUV veered off course and hit three pedestrians, resulting in one death and two critical injuries in Agra on Saturday evening. The driver, Aniket Sharma, tried to flee the scene but was apprehended by onlookers. Eyewitnesses reported that Sharma had stopped near an industrial area culvert to ask for a matchbox. Failing to find one, he continued driving, losing control of the vehicle and colliding with the victims. Rajan, 32, from Mathura district, died during treatment at S N Medical College, while Dau Dayal, 35, and Mohan Singh, 26, also from Mathura, suffered critical injuries and are undergoing treatment at a private hospital.
Sharma, displaying unruly behavior, allegedly threatened the police with his political connections upon their arrival. The crowd that had gathered attempted to free him and engaged in verbal abuse towards the officers. However, the police successfully dispersed the crowd, arrested Sharma, and confiscated the car. An FIR has been registered against Sharma under IPC Sections 279 (rash driving), 338 (causing grievous hurt), and 304-A (negligent act causing death). He remains in custody awaiting court proceedings.
The deceased, Rajan, leaves behind two minor children and was the sole breadwinner of his family. Mohan Singh, his neighbor, suffered multiple fractures, while Dau Dayal, from a nearby village, sustained severe head injuries. Pramod Kumar, a relative of the deceased, expressed grief over Rajan’s untimely death and the impact it will have on his family.
Authorities revealed that the SUV involved in the accident has pending Rs 2,000 challans for speeding violations. This information raises concerns about the driver’s past traffic offenses and his responsibility behind the wheel.
The incident serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of drunk driving and the importance of stringent enforcement of traffic regulations. With innocent lives lost and families shattered, it is imperative that drivers understand the serious implications of their actions when under the influence of alcohol. Such reckless behavior not only endangers lives but also exposes individuals to legal repercussions.
Law enforcement agencies have a vital role to play in ensuring road safety, especially in cases involving drunk driving. Swift action against offenders and strict adherence to legal and ethical standards will send a message that such incidents will not be tolerated. Additionally, proactive measures such as increased breathalyzer testing, awareness campaigns, and rehabilitation programs can help curb incidents of drunk driving and protect pedestrians and motorists alike.
The tragic incident in Agra calls for introspection and renewed efforts by both individuals and society as a whole to prioritize responsible behavior on the roads. By doing so, we can collectively contribute to safer communities and prevent the loss of precious lives due to avoidable accidents caused by drunk driving.
