Universal Unveils Massive Park Expansion in Challenge to Disney, Gender-Swaps Dr. Frankenstein

Universal Studios is gearing up for a major expansion of its Florida theme park, Universal Epic Universe, as it looks to challenge Disney’s dominance and capitalize on the Mouse House’s financial struggles and disillusioned fan base. While the move aims to wow parkgoers with an immersive experience spanning over 50 attractions, entertainment options, dining establishments, and shopping experiences, there is a controversial twist.

Universal’s expansion includes a revival of its iconic Universal Monsters characters, which originated in the 1930s and ’40s and featured Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Wolf Man. The entertainment giant has decided to resurrect its Dark Universe concept for this section of the park. Initially, the Dark Universe was intended to encompass a series of films that would remake and reimagine the classic monster movies in black-and-white. However, after the disappointing box office performance of Tom Cruise’s The Mummy in 2017, Universal shelved its plans for the Dark Universe. Now, with the upcoming Universal Epic Universe park, the studio is resurrecting the name and concept.

Concept art reveals familiar characters such as Frankenstein’s Monster and the Wolf Man, while a new take on Dracula seems to be in the works. However, Universal is also introducing a gender-swapped version of Dr. Frankenstein. In the original 1931 film, the mad scientist responsible for bringing The Monster to life was known as Victor Frankenstein. But Universal’s new iteration will feature a female lead called Victoria instead.

The Dark Universe section of Universal Epic Universe will provide guests with an immersive experience, showcasing Dr. Victoria Frankenstein’s experiments and a shadowy landscape where monsters roam. Alongside the Dark Universe, Universal is planning three other immersive areas in the park: Celestial Park, the How to Train Your Dragon Isle of Berk, and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Universal’s decision to expand its park comes as Disney faces declining attendance and financial setbacks. Last year, Disney experienced an unfathomable drop in attendance at its Florida parks. Moreover, the company’s controversial approaches to social issues, including accusations of pushing a radical gay agenda, have fueled the backlash against Disney, reflected in its declining stock prices and underperforming movies.

Seizing the opportunity, Universal hopes to attract families who have become disenchanted with Disney. However, some concerns have been raised about the company’s decision to incorporate woke elements into its dark and iconic monster franchise. Nevertheless, Universal remains determined to provide an unforgettable adventure and challenge Disney’s reign.

As Universal continues its park expansion plans, the battle for theme park supremacy between Universal and Disney intensifies. Only time will tell if Universal’s bold move will pay off and attract the disgruntled fans flocking away from Disney’s once-mighty empire.

The Universal Epic Universe park is set to open its doors to the public in 2025, promising an epic and immersive adventure that will transport visitors to new worlds and captivate their imaginations like never before.
