Various potential use cases of 5G were presented by the industry for enterprises, education, agriculture, health, and e-commerce activities at a workshop on ‘5G Use Case Labs: Awareness and Pre-Commissioning Readiness’ held at IIT Roorkee. The two-day workshop, organized by the National Telecommunications Institute for Policy Research, Innovation, and Training (NTIPRIT), aimed to generate awareness about 5G technology use cases and the 5G Use Case Labs being set up across India.
Gunjan Dave, Member (Technology) from the Department of Telecommunications, Government of India, inaugurated the workshop and highlighted the importance of 5G technology reaching every section of society to contribute to making India a developed nation. The workshop saw the participation of more than 130 individuals representing about 30 institutions.
During the workshop, the Department of Telecommunications – Standards-R&D-Innovation (DoT-SRI) made presentations and invited experts for brainstorming discussions on 5G technology. The workshop also focused on discussing the prospects of Beyond 5G/6G and the Government of India 6G roadmap.
The SRI division of DoT-HQ has been leading the efforts in policy implementation and capacity building related to 5G labs. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the establishment of 100 5G labs across the country.
Director of IIT Roorkee, Kamal Kishore Pant, expressed enthusiasm in utilizing the 5G Use Case Lab to its full potential. Deepak Kumar, Secretary from the Government of Uttarakhand, and Deb Kumar Chakraborty, Director General of NTIPRIT, also shared their views during the workshop.
Robert Ravi from SRI, DoT HQ, presented his perspectives on the ‘beyond 5G/6G’ features and the GoI 6G roadmap. A panel discussion involving representatives from academia, industry, and DoT was moderated by Ravi. The discussion aimed to explore the effective utilization of 5G use case ecosystem labs.
Throughout the workshop, industry representatives, researchers, students, and faculty members from institutions like IIT Madras and IIT Roorkee exchanged ideas and deliberated on various potential use cases of 5G, including those related to enterprises, education, agriculture, health, and e-commerce activities.
The workshop successfully raised awareness about the importance of 5G technology and the development of use cases in different sectors. The establishment of 5G Use Case Labs across India, with funding from DoT, is expected to accelerate the adoption of 5G technology and contribute to the country’s digital transformation.
Overall, the workshop at IIT Roorkee provided a platform for stakeholders to collaborate and explore the possibilities of 5G technology, paving the way for its seamless integration into various industries and sectors across the nation.
