Multiple propane tanks exploded after a fire broke out at the site of the largest Sikh temple in California, causing damage to a room used for religious classes. The incident occurred on Monday at the Gurdwara Sacramento Sikh Society in the Sacramento area. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Emergency crews responded to the incident around 3:30 p.m., with the fire burning into the building’s attic and causing a partial roof collapse. The blaze also ignited at least six large propane tanks, resulting in explosions that sent metal flying and created a massive plume of smoke visible for miles.
Authorities evacuated worshipers from the temple property, and the fire was contained to the building where it originated, without spreading to the main temple. However, the structure suffered significant damage.
According to Metro Fire Battalion Chief Parker Wilbourn, the cause of the fire is currently unknown, and it is also unclear where the fire initially started. Wilbourn stated, We just don’t know that yet, but there were propane tanks involved and there is significant damage to the structure itself.
Despite the alarming nature of the incident, Bobbie Singh-Allen, the mayor of nearby Elk Grove and a member of the gurdwara, expressed relief that there were no casualties. The gurdwara attracts approximately 2,000 people per week.
Authorities are not currently treating the incident as suspicious, although investigations are ongoing. Wilbourn emphasized the fortunate absence of injuries, stating, Several of these tanks are adjacent to our fire engines, so we’re very fortunate one of these tanks didn’t shoot out and harm one of the members, first responders, civilians or deputies.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety measures and prompt emergency response. The local community is grateful that no lives were lost, and the focus now turns to determining the cause of the fire and assessing the extent of the damage to the gurdwara.
