Brightline to install new cameras following deadly back-to-back Melbourne train crashes

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Brightline has announced plans to install new cameras at an intersection in Melbourne, Florida, where two tragic train crashes occurred consecutively. The cameras will be set up along the U.S. 1 corridor near W.H. Jackson, just past downtown Melbourne. These measures come in response to two accidents that took place on January 10 and January 12.

The first crash, which transpired on January 10, resulted in the death of 62-year-old Charles Julian Phillip and left three others injured. The second crash, on January 12, claimed the lives of 52-year-old Lisa Ann Batchelder and Michael Anthony Degasperi.

Law enforcement officials revealed that in both incidents, the drivers attempted to outrun the approaching trains. In order to combat such reckless behavior, the newly installed cameras will capture images if someone bypasses the crossing arms. Those found in violation of the law will receive a warning via mail, and their information will be forwarded to law enforcement agencies.

Tragically, the three fatalities in Melbourne this January bring the total number of deaths to at least 108 since Brightline commenced operations in July 2017. This results in an alarming death rate of approximately one fatality per 38,000 miles (61,000 kilometers) traveled, making it the nation’s highest among more than 800 railroads, as per an ongoing analysis conducted by the Associated Press since 2019.

Among the railroads in the United States that log a minimum of 100,000 train miles per year, the second-worst fatality rate since 2017 belongs to California’s Caltrain commuter line. Caltrain has averaged one death per 125,000 miles (201,000 kilometers) traveled during this period.

It’s essential to note that none of Brightline’s previous fatalities can be attributed to negligence or fault on the railroad’s part. The majority of incidents involve suicides, pedestrians who attempted to dash across the tracks ahead of the oncoming train, or drivers who chose to maneuver around crossing gates instead of patiently waiting.

For Brightline, the implementation of the new cameras symbolizes a step in the direction of heightened safety and prevention. By actively discouraging rash actions and serving as a visual deterrent, the hope is that drivers will exercise greater caution and respect when encountering rail crossings.

In conclusion, Brightline’s decision to install additional cameras represents a proactive effort to address the recent tragic accidents in Melbourne. With the goal of curbing reckless behavior and increasing safety, these cameras will capture images of any violations, enabling law enforcement to take appropriate action. As Brightline seeks to enhance the safety of its operations, it remains crucial for drivers and pedestrians alike to exercise vigilance and comply with traffic laws when approaching rail crossings.
