Kerala Police Enhance Judge’s Security Cover Amid Online Threats After Murder Case Verdict
Alappuzha | Kerala Police have increased the security cover for Mavelikkara Additional Sessions Judge-I V G Sreedevi in response to online threats received after she delivered the verdict in the murder case of BJP OBC wing leader Ranjith Sreenivasan. The police have taken the threats seriously and deployed a sub-inspector along with several other personnel to ensure the safety of the judge.
The court, on Tuesday, issued death sentences to 15 individuals associated with the now-banned outfit Popular Front of India (PFI) for their involvement in the 2021 murder of the BJP OBC wing leader in Alappuzha district.
Following the verdict, several posts insulting the judge emerged on various social media platforms and were widely circulated. To address these growing concerns, the police have intensified security measures for Judge Sreedevi.
The court, in its order, justified the capital punishment given to all the accused individuals in the case. Ranjith Sreenivasan, who served as a lawyer and the BJP OBC Morcha state secretary, was brutally attacked and killed in his home on December 19, 2021, in front of his family. The perpetrators of the crime were activists linked to the PFI and the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI).
During the investigation, the police suspected that the murder was in retaliation for the killing of SDPI leader K S Shan, which occurred just a few hours earlier. It is important to note that the trial for Shan’s murder has yet to commence.
With the increased security cover, the Kerala Police aim to ensure the safety and protection of Judge Sreedevi amidst these online threats. The authorities remain vigilant and committed to upholding the rule of law.
The recent threats against the judge highlight the challenges faced by judicial officials in delivering justice. It is imperative that the legal system takes necessary steps to safeguard its members from intimidation and protect their independence.
The widespread circulation of derogatory posts directed at Judge Sreedevi is a concerning development that underscores the need for vigilance against online harassment and abuse. Both individuals and law enforcement agencies must work together to address such issues and ensure the well-being of those involved in the justice system.
The safety of judges and other officials is paramount to maintaining a fair and just society. By increasing security measures and actively addressing online threats, the Kerala Police have taken a positive step towards safeguarding the individuals responsible for upholding the rule of law.
Efforts to ensure security and protect the independence of the judiciary are essential for a society that values justice and upholds the principles of democracy. As this case progresses, it is crucial that the authorities remain steadfast in their commitment to providing a safe environment for those involved in the legal process.
