In its third edition, the Artmiabo International Art Festival (AMIAF) 2024 is captivating audiences with its Sculptor’s Odyssey exhibition, shining a spotlight on talented artists such as Pius Waritimi and presenting awards to deserving individuals.
The esteemed festival, led by Miabo Enyadike, is an annual event that celebrates art in its various forms. With the theme of Sculptor’s Odyssey, this year’s festival is set to take place from April 29 to May 1, 2024, at the EbonyLife Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos.
Among the recipients of the festival’s awards is Pius Waritimi, a wood sculptor and academic, whose work is also being showcased at AMIAF 2004. Waritimi, known for his expertise and dedication to the art form, spoke about the event, the challenges faced by sculptors, and the future of sculpture.
Enyadike praised Waritimi as an art purist and artpreneur who has inspired numerous established artists, including Timi Willis-Amah, Diseye Tantua, and Nkem Alikor. Despite his significant contributions to the art community in Rivers and Bayelsa states, Waritimi has been somewhat underreported by mainstream media.
Waritimi’s impressive portfolio includes public space artworks such as The Lady Justice, a series of sculptures in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State. Explaining his inspiration behind these sculptures, Waritimi stated that they were designed to represent traditional attire rather than the imported concept of Lady Justice wearing a gown.
Reflecting on his career as both a painter and sculptor, Waritimi addressed the prevalence of painting over sculpture among artists who have completed academic training. He argued that the physical demands of sculpture may deter some artists, while painting requires less physical exertion.
Addressing concerns about the availability of wood as a sculptural medium, Waritimi reassured that wood remained accessible if sourced properly. No wood is wasted, he stated, emphasizing the importance of selecting the right material for each artistic creation.
As technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), continues to evolve, concerns arise regarding its impact on art forms such as painting. Waritimi acknowledged the presence of AI and predicted the possibility of artificial sculptors, but he believed reproducing certain sculptures through AI technology would not be an easy task.
For the Sculptor’s Odyssey exhibition at AMIAF 2024, Waritimi plans to showcase several experimental pieces, including The Fisherman’s Parlor and three other works exploring forms, lines, and space. He also expressed the desire to exhibit a piece highlighting the environmental issues surrounding the oil industry in Nigeria.
In addition to his artistic achievements, Waritimi has mentored numerous artists throughout his career. Drawing upon his experience, he noted the thin line between formal and informal mentorship, highlighting the importance of promoting the significance of fine arts in society.
Born in 1955, Waritimi received his first degree in Fine and Applied Arts from the University of Nigeria, Nnsuka. He has since dedicated his career to both academia and studio practice, leaving a lasting impact on the art community.
