Former UFC flyweight champion, Demetrious Johnson, has been called out by rising contender Muhammad Mokaev. Mokaev, who is ranked No.8 in the flyweight division, expressed his desire to face Johnson in a grappling match following his scheduled fight against Alex Perez.
However, Mokaev’s callout didn’t sit well with most fans, leading him to clarify his intentions in a subsequent post. He explained that he simply wants to test himself against a legend of the sport and acknowledged Johnson’s long-standing status as the No.1 pound-for-pound fighter.
Mokaev took to social media to defend his callout, stating, I just wanna compete with the best in the sport, what’s wrong with that? He also mentioned witnessing Johnson’s showdown against Tim Elliott, whom Mokaev himself defeated in a previous match.
Fellow UFC fighter Tom Aspinall chimed in, comparing Mokaev’s situation to his own desire to unify his interim title against undisputed champion Jon Jones. Aspinall shared Mokaev’s post and commented, People get very offended when you want to fight the best.
Meanwhile, Jones has not responded positively to Aspinall’s callout as he has his eyes set on Stipe Miocic, considered by many as the greatest heavyweight fighter. The two were initially scheduled to face off at UFC 295, but Jones withdrew from the bout due to an injury. The UFC has announced plans to reschedule the matchup for 2024.
