The world’s largest cruise ship, ‘Icon of the Seas’, begins its inaugural journey from the Port of Miami on Saturday. The ship, equivalent in size to almost four city blocks, is a remarkable feat of engineering and luxury. Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas measures nearly 1,200 feet (365 meters) from bow to stern.
The ship was christened on Tuesday in a grand ceremony attended by soccer legend Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami teammates. Royal Caribbean Group President and CEO Jason Liberty described the Icon of the Seas as the ultimate multigenerational family vacation, offering unforgettable experiences for all ages.
At a cost of $2 billion, the Icon of the Seas is part of Royal Caribbean’s new Quantum Class of ships. It is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and aims to be more environmentally friendly than smaller cruise ships. The vessel is organized into eight neighborhoods across 20 decks, featuring an array of amenities such as six waterslides, seven swimming pools, an ice skating rink, a theater, and over 40 restaurants, bars, and lounges.
With a maximum capacity of up to 7,600 passengers and an additional 2,350 crew members, the Icon of the Seas promises a vibrant and bustling atmosphere on board. The ship is powered by six dual-fuel engines, allowing it to run on liquefied natural gas (LNG), a cleaner fuel alternative.
Royal Caribbean has made sustainability a priority for the Icon of the Seas. Every kilowatt used on the ship is carefully considered for energy efficiency and emission reductions. The vessel also offers a wide range of entertainment options, including 50 musicians and comedians, as well as a 16-piece orchestra.
Built over 900 days at a shipyard in Turku, Finland, the Icon of the Seas stands as a testament to its immense size. Spanning 20 decks and surpassing the height of the Eiffel Tower, the ship can accommodate over 5,600 passengers and a crew of 2,350.
The Icon of the Seas has already made waves in the industry, triggering significant booking numbers upon its unveiling. Royal Caribbean experienced its single most significant booking day and highest volume booking week in its 53-year history.
As the Icon of the Seas embarks on its maiden voyage, it represents a new era in the world of cruising. Passengers onboard can expect unparalleled luxury, entertainment, and adventure as they explore tropical islands on this magnificent vessel.
