Meta Platforms, Inc., the parent company of Facebook, is embarking on a groundbreaking endeavor to develop artificial general intelligence (AGI) that can rival or surpass human intelligence. In a recent Instagram post, META CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared the company’s long-term vision of creating AGI and making it widely accessible to benefit everyone.
Zuckerberg emphasized the need for advancements in various aspects of AI, including reasoning, planning, coding, memory, and other cognitive abilities. He expressed the intention to develop the best AI assistants for creators, businesses, and more. Moreover, his vision involves making the AGI system open-source, enabling easy replication and usage by individuals looking to build their own chatbot.
However, concerns have been raised by OpenAI and Google regarding the potential dangers of providing open-source AGI software, as it could facilitate the spread of inaccurate information.
Central to Meta’s AGI project is a sophisticated language model called Llama 3. This model possesses the capability to comprehend and generate human language text, serving as a vital component of the AGI system.
To support the processing power required for this ambitious project, Zuckerberg revealed that Meta has invested in approximately 350,000 H100 graphics cards from Nvidia. These cards are expected to be delivered by the end of the year. Additionally, Meta’s AI research teams, FAIR and GenAI, are collaborating to accelerate the development of AGI.
Addressing Meta’s recent launch of Ray-Ban smart glasses, Zuckerberg expressed his belief that AI will become an integral part of people’s daily interactions, with glasses serving as an ideal interface for AI to perceive and respond to users’ surroundings.
Meta’s endeavor to develop AGI aligns with OpenAI’s pursuit of creating AI systems that surpass human intelligence. However, the ethical implications and potential consequences of such advanced technology continue to be subjects of extensive discussion.
Stay tuned as Meta Platforms, Inc. progresses in its mission to unlock the full potential of artificial general intelligence, bringing forth transformative advancements in various fields and shaping the future of AI for generations to come.
