Stanley Responds to Concern Its Viral Cups Contain Lead

Stanley Quencher cups, the viral sensation loved by social media influencers, have come under scrutiny after claims emerged that the tumblers contain lead. The reusable 40 oz cups have gained popularity for their environmental friendliness and stylish design. According to Stanley’s website, these tumblers can keep hot drinks warm for at least seven hours and cold drinks cool for at least 11 hours. With their rising popularity, Stanley experienced a significant revenue boost, generating $750 million in 2023, a tenfold increase from the $75 million in revenue achieved in 2022.

However, the increased attention on the product has also sparked concerns about its safety. Various TikTok users and social media influencers have conducted tests on the cups, alleging that their results indicated the presence of lead. This is particularly worrisome as lead can be harmful if ingested, especially for children under the age of six. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises that the effects of lead poisoning can be permanent and disabling.

In response to these concerns, Stanley assured NBC News that while a lead pellet is indeed used in the manufacturing process to insulate drinks from outside temperatures, it is encased by stainless steel. Therefore, the lead would not be able to contaminate the drinks unless the stainless steel barrier was removed, which Stanley’s spokesperson stated was rare. Stanley also highlighted that it strictly adheres to all guidelines and requirements set by the FDA during the manufacturing process. In an effort to address the issue, they emphasized that their engineering and supply chain teams are actively working on developing innovative, alternative materials for use in the sealing process.

TIME magazine reached out to Stanley for further information regarding their use of lead and plans for future alternatives.

The concern surrounding Stanley’s product materials arises shortly after limited-edition tumblers caused a frenzy at Target. Released as part of the Galentine’s Collection on December 31, the Cosmo Pink and Target Red cups led to crowds rushing to buy these special items.

In order to ensure transparency and provide accurate information, Stanley has responded to concerns about the presence of lead in its popular Quencher cups. While acknowledging the use of lead pellets during manufacturing, the company maintains that the lead is contained within a stainless steel barrier and cannot contaminate drinks under normal circumstances. Furthermore, Stanley is actively working on finding alternative materials for the sealing process, aiming to address the concerns raised by consumers and social media influencers alike. As the investigation unfolds, it remains crucial for Stanley to prioritize the safety and well-being of its customers, particularly children who may be more vulnerable to the harmful effects of lead. Till then, it’s recommended for consumers to exercise caution, follow FDA guidelines, and await further updates from the company.
