South Salem High School has announced the appointment of former student Josh Vanlue as their new head football coach, replacing Scott DuFault, who retired earlier this month. Vanlue, who has served as offensive coordinator at South Salem since 2016, brings a wealth of experience both as a player and coach. Having excelled in multiple sports during his time at South Salem, Vanlue is well-respected and beloved in the community. With his appointment, the school hopes to continue their success from last season, where they clinched the league championship and went 9-1 overall.
Vanlue’s connection to South Salem dates back to his time as a student, where he was a three-sport star. His senior season in 2001 earned him recognition as the Valley League co-offensive player of the year for his impressive passing statistics. Following his high school career, Vanlue spent time at Foothill College in California, but unfortunately, injuries prevented him from playing. However, he continued his football journey as a walk-on at Kentucky before eventually finishing his college career at Western Oregon.
Vanlue’s coaching journey began in 2007 when he returned to South Salem as an assistant coach, specifically working with quarterbacks. He made significant contributions to the team’s success in that role until 2012. Alongside his coaching responsibilities, Vanlue is also a dedicated special education teacher at South Salem, displaying his commitment to both academics and athletics.
South Salem’s decision to hire Vanlue comes after an outstanding season that saw them claim the league championship. Although their journey was cut short in the first round of the state playoffs with a loss to Tigard, the team is hopeful that Vanlue’s expertise and leadership will push them further in the coming seasons.
With a record of 141-100 at South Salem alone and a total of 163-118 in his 28-year coaching career, DuFault leaves behind big shoes to fill. However, given Vanlue’s previous achievements and deep understanding of the Saxons’ football program, the school believes they have found the right person to carry on their legacy. The community eagerly awaits the upcoming season under their new head coach’s guidance, hoping for more victories and continued growth.
