European Commission Launches AI Factory & Office to Support Startups

The European Commission has proposed the launch of an AI factory, an AI Office, and other AI-related initiatives to support European startups and SMEs in developing trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI) that respects European Union (EU) values and rules. European startups will have simplified access to dedicated AI supercomputers, fostering the development of general-purpose AI models. This initiative aims to accelerate the adoption of AI technology. The EU AI Act, which was agreed upon in December 2023, aims to facilitate the development, deployment, and adoption of reliable AI in the EU. In a ‘State of the Union’ address in September 2023, Ursula von der Leyen announced plans to make Europe’s supercomputers available to innovative European AI startups. The Commission also launched the Large AI Grand Challenge in November 2023, providing financial support and supercomputing access to AI startups. The AI Factories, or one-stop shops, will aid AI startups and researchers in creating algorithms, testing and validating large-scale AI models, and ensuring their access to dedicated AI supercomputers. Additionally, the Commission will establish an AI Office to develop and coordinate AI policy at the European level and supervise the implementation and enforcement of the forthcoming AI Act. These initiatives aim to support AI startups and promote innovation while adhering to legal and ethical standards. By providing dedicated resources and creating a supportive environment, the EU aims to nurture the growth of trustworthy and responsible AI technologies.
