A staggering €200,000 worth of damage was caused to a county Galway rugby club after a fire broke out over the May bank holiday weekend. The fire, which broke out on Saturday evening, destroyed the new purpose-built equipment shed, club merchandise, and equipment but thankfully, nobody was injured. Corrib RFC had to cancel the remainder of their season as a result and are now on a mission to get up and running in time for the new season in August.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the gardaí. In the meantime, the rugby club has launched an online fundraising campaign to restore their grounds and to continue focusing on the sport that they love. The club is determined to recover from this setback and emerge stronger, with a major fundraising effort in the works.
Last week, a meeting was held at Anglers Hotel in Headford where it was agreed that the club needs to raise significant funds if they are to rebuild and start anew. The club has set up a GoFundMe page on their Facebook page for anyone who would like to contribute to their cause. Chris Kiely, the club secretary, described the incident as a devastating blow and said the club is now more determined than ever to come back from this.
Everyone at Corrib RFC is eager to get back on the pitch and continue doing what they love, but they need the help of the community to make that happen. Every little bit can make a difference, so if you’re looking to support a local sports club, consider donating to the cause. The rugby club is welcoming all forms of support as they aim to get back on their feet and continue representing Headford on the rugby field.
