Turkey’s and Orban’s Influence in BiH Concerns Former Peace Envoy

Former Austrian diplomat and peace envoy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Wolfgang Petritsch, has expressed worry over Turkey’s growing influence in the country, as well as the negative impact of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in the region. Petritsch voiced his concerns during an interview with N1’s Pressing, stating that Turkey’s distancing from its alliance with the United States and the European Union is a cause for concern. While acknowledging the close cultural and historical ties between Bosnia and Turkey, Petritsch emphasized the importance of aligning their relations with European standards and values.

The former diplomat also raised alarms about Orban’s influence, describing him as a puppet in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s hands. Petritsch highlighted Orban’s attempts to exert influence on Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik, warning that their friendship will not benefit Bosnia and Herzegovina. Expressing disappointment with the lack of positive post-war atmosphere in the country, Petritsch criticized the pessimism prevalent among citizens and the international community.

Petritsch further discussed Bosnia and Herzegovina’s aspirations to join the European Union, noting that many politicians in the country and some EU member states only pay lip service to the idea. Although acknowledging that Bosnia and Herzegovina is closer to EU membership than ever before, Petritsch expressed concern that certain aspects have regressed since his tenure as high representative from 1999 to 2002. He called for renewed efforts from both Europe and the US to address the current impasse and push politicians to fulfill their obligations.

When asked about the country’s ability to meet the criteria for opening accession talks with the EU by March, Petritsch expressed skepticism but believed there was still time to achieve it. He emphasized the need for politicians to be actively urged to fulfill their responsibilities, stating that success in the EU requires adaptation and cooperation.

Regarding fears of a Cyprus scenario occurring in Bosnia, Petritsch acknowledged the mistake of allowing a divided Cyprus to join the EU, but indicated that such a situation was unlikely to be repeated. He reaffirmed his belief that Bosnia and Herzegovina will join the EU as a sovereign country within its current borders, urging both the EU and Bosnia to meet the requirements of the new geopolitical era.

In conclusion, Petritsch’s concerns over Turkey’s influence in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as Orban’s meddling in the region, highlight the need for vigilance in safeguarding European standards and values. He called for increased attention from both the EU and the US to address the challenges facing Bosnia and Herzegovina as it aspires to join the European Union.
