India’s First HPV Vaccine, CERVAVAC, Now Available for ₹200-₹400, Significantly Reducing Risk of Deadly Cancers

Cervical cancer, the second most common cancer among women in India, can now be prevented with the help of an affordable indigenously developed vaccine. CERVAVAC, India’s first HPV vaccine to combat cervical cancer, is expected to cost between ₹200 and ₹400 and is now available in all private hospitals across the country.

Cervical cancer is caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which can also lead to other types of cancers such as penile cancer, anal cancer, and oropharyngeal cancer. Oropharyngeal cancer specifically affects the back part of the throat known as the oropharynx.

By administering the HPV vaccine, individuals can significantly reduce their risk of developing these four types of deadly cancers. It is crucial to raise awareness about the effectiveness of this vaccine, especially considering that the HPV vaccination for cervical cancer was launched on Cancer Day in 2016.

CERVAVAC, developed by the Serum Institute of India (SII), has been approved by the Drug Controller General of India. Notably, the cost of the indigenously developed vaccine is significantly lower compared to its foreign counterparts, which range from ₹2000 to ₹4000.

But what exactly is the HPV vaccine?

HPV vaccines are designed to prevent specific types of human papillomavirus infections. They are available in varieties that protect against two, four, or nine types of HPV. All HPV vaccines provide protection against at least HPV types 16 and 18, which pose the highest risk for cervical cancer.

Medical experts have discovered that HPV infections not only lead to cervical cancer but can also cause penile, anal, and oropharyngeal cancers. By receiving the HPV vaccine, individuals can reduce their susceptibility to all four of these cancers. Let’s explore the vaccine’s effectiveness.

Remarkably Effective Results Reported in Scotland

A recent study conducted by Public Health Scotland in collaboration with the Universities of Strathclyde and Edinburgh has demonstrated the high efficacy of the HPV vaccine in preventing cervical cancer. The vaccine was initially administered to girls aged 9 to 14 in 2008. Now, these girls have reached the ages of 25 to 30 and have undergone screening. Encouragingly, not a single case of cervical cancer has been reported among the vaccinated group. This groundbreaking research showcases a 100% success rate and serves as a compelling endorsement for the vaccine.

While receiving the HPV vaccine can significantly reduce the risk of developing these cancers, experts stress the importance of regular screenings. Vaccination alone may not prevent every case of cancer, underscoring the need for continued check-ups. Moreover, it is crucial for the government to include the HPV vaccine in the national immunization program, enabling widespread access and ultimately making cervical cancer a rare disease in India.

With the introduction of CERVAVAC, an affordable indigenous HPV vaccine, India has taken a significant step forward in the fight against cervical cancer and other HPV-related cancers. By promoting awareness, encouraging vaccination, and ensuring regular screenings, we can collectively combat these deadly diseases and protect the health and well-being of women across the nation.
