At least a third of American adults say they sleep more in the winter, according to research by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). Studies have shown that our body’s sleep needs may increase during the colder season. While humans do not hibernate like some animals, our body takes cues from the Sun, which can affect our sleep habits. A study examining sleep duration in Americans from 2003 to 2016 found that the average duration of sleep rises during the winter months. Additionally, a paper published in the journal Frontiers in Neuroscience reveals that people tend to experience more REM (rapid eye movement) sleep in the winter. The amount and timing of light our eyes receive from the Sun play a significant role in setting our circadian rhythms, which regulate sleep-wake cycles. When there is less daylight and sunlight during the winter, our bodies may produce more melatonin, a hormone that promotes sleep. In colder weather, metabolism also increases, triggering the need for more sleep. Lack of sleep in the winter can lead to a cycle of needing more sleep to compensate for the lack of quality rest the night before. Sleep deficiency has been linked to various health issues, including dementia, depression, diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. It is important to listen to our bodies and provide it with the rest it requires. Understanding how our sleep patterns change in different seasons can help us prioritize our sleep and overall well-being.
