Margot Robbie snubbed as Oscar nominations revealed
Historical epic Oppenheimer dominates this year’s Oscar nominations with a staggering 13 nods, positioning it as a frontrunner for the highly coveted Best Picture award. Close behind is the gothic comedy Poor Things, which received 11 nominations, solidifying its place in the race for top honors within the film industry.
The Best Picture category also features feminist doll adventure Barbie, Leonard Bernstein biopic Maestro, and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. These exceptional films complete the impressive lineup competing for the esteemed title.
Christopher Nolan, nominated for Best Director for Oppenheimer, expressed his elation at the film’s success, calling it a real thrill and an honor to be included among this year’s exceptional works. In an interview, he highlighted the overall strength of the nominated films, acknowledging that it has been a remarkable year for cinema.
While Barbie received eight nominations, including nods for supporting actress America Ferrera and supporting actor Ryan Gosling, the Australian lead actress Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig were notably snubbed by the voters. However, Robbie still holds a nomination as a producer in the Best Picture category, and Gerwig received recognition for her adapted screenplay, which she co-wrote with her husband Noah Baumbach.
Bradley Cooper’s absence from the Best Director list for Maestro came as a surprise, considering his nomination for Best Actor for his portrayal of composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein. Cooper will be up against stiff competition, including Cillian Murphy, who played scientist J Robert Oppenheimer in Oppenheimer.
Further highlighting the diversity of this year’s nominations, ten of the twenty acting contenders are first-time nominees. The omission of Leonardo DiCaprio, despite his role in Killers of the Flower Moon, was another unexpected twist. On the other hand, Robert De Niro secured a supporting actor nomination for his performance in the same film.
The competition for Best Original Song promises to captivate audiences. Ryan Gosling’s poignant ballad I’m Just Ken from Barbie will vie for the award against Billie Eilish’s haunting track What Was I Made For? also featured in the film.
The 96th Oscars nominations were announced by Zazie Beetz from Atlanta and Jack Quaid from The Boys. The esteemed winners will be determined by the esteemed members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, comprising approximately 11,000 film professionals, including actors, directors, producers, and craftspeople.
The eagerly anticipated award ceremony will be broadcast live on March 10, courtesy of Walt Disney’s ABC network, where the golden statuettes will be exalted.
As movie enthusiasts and fans eagerly await the night of the Oscars, the nominations have already sparked endless debates and discussions about the deserving winners. The recognition of outstanding contributions to the film industry is indeed a cause for celebration.
