Families Push Kids into Limelight, Raising Ethical Concerns

Families are going to extreme measures to push their children into the limelight, sparking ethical concerns regarding the exploitative nature of their actions. Some parents are relentlessly seeking acting opportunities for their children without considering their abilities and interests. Others harbor dreams of securing lucrative million-dollar offers from sports clubs, while some resort to using their children for virtual begging on social media platforms.

Psychologist Acar Baltaş believes that such actions stem from the unfulfilled narcissistic tendencies of parents. They identify themselves with the children. The success achieved by the child becomes the success of the whole family. Popularity and financial gain are seen as contributions and outlets for parents, Baltaş explains.

While fame may seem alluring, it can burden the lives of young children. Gamze Dar, a coach for many child actors, expresses concern about the immense pressure parents place on their children. In some cases, parents neglect their child’s education and attempt to compensate with private lessons. Additionally, some families agree to unfavorable conditions on sets and pay additional fees, subjecting their children to harsh circumstances. There are even instances where children are forced into acting against their will by their parents.

Legal expert Kardelen Yarli highlights that children under the age of 14 are not permitted to work, adding that traditional regulations struggle to keep pace with technological advancements in the internet and television industries. The rise of child acting and the emergence of internet parents present challenges that require updated, effective regulations.

Yarli warns parents that if their child’s income is not utilized for their education and development, the child possesses the right to file a lawsuit. This serves as a reminder that the earnings of child performers should be appropriately channeled for their future growth.

The trend of thrusting children into the limelight raises ethical concerns about the well-being and autonomy of young individuals. It is vital for parents and society at large to prioritize the overall development, education, and emotional welfare of these children, rather than solely focusing on their fame and financial gains.

In a time where the pursuit of stardom and notoriety is highly enticing, it is crucial to remember the inherent vulnerabilities of children and the potential harm that can arise from their exploitation. Balancing ambition with the well-being of young individuals is crucial to ensure a healthy and ethical environment for child performers.
